FAQ's
There are two types of JioKrishi IoT devices:
-
JioKawach: This device includes 8 sensors — Soil Moisture, Soil Temperature, Soil EC (Electrical Conductivity), Leaf Wetness, Leaf Temperature, Ambient Temperature, Humidity, and Rainfall.
-
JioNetra: This device includes 3 sensors — Soil Moisture, Soil Temperature, and Soil EC.
The JioKrishi IoT AWS device offers the following salient features:
- IP67 rated: Resistant to dust, water, and regular wear and tear.
- Solar-powered: Easy-to-install, DIY-friendly device.
- Built-in IoT sensors: Collects data on soil, weather, and crops.
- Sensor compatibility: Supports multiple types of soil sensors.
- Advanced soil moisture sensing: Uses TDR (Time-Domain Reflectometry) technology for accurate readings, even in varying soil salinity conditions.
There are a total of 8 types of sensors that come with JioKrishi IoT devices. These are categorized into two groups:
A. Above-ground sensors:
- Ambient Temperature
- Relative Humidity
- Rainfall
- Leaf Wetness
- Leaf Temperature
B. Below-ground sensors:
- Soil Moisture
- Soil Temperature
- Soil Electrical Conductivity (Soil EC)
By default, our device comes with 1 soil moisture sensor. However, our device is compatible with 2 soil moisture sensors. Hence, farmers would have the option to buy 1 additional soil moisture sensor.
For an aerial distance of up to 2 km, a single set of above-the-soil sensors is sufficient, as environmental conditions remain relatively uniform over that range. However, the number of below-the-soil sensors required depends on the variability of the soil profile and the types of irrigation used.
If there is significant variation in soil conditions or irrigation methods, the farm should be divided into sub-farms. Each sub-farm should have its own set of below-the-soil sensors to ensure accurate and localized advisories.
Based on these factors, you can determine the number of sensors required for your farm.
We offer two types of IoT devices:
-
IoT device with all sensors: Includes both above-the-soil sensors (e.g., temperature, humidity, rainfall, dew point) and below-the-soil sensors (e.g., soil moisture, soil EC, soil temperature).
-
IoT device with soil sensors only: Includes only the below-the-soil sensors, which measure soil moisture, soil EC, and soil temperature.
ET-based irrigation alerts are calculated using evapotranspiration (ET), which is the combined effect of water evaporation from the soil surface and transpiration from plants. These alerts estimate the water requirement of crops based on environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, solar radiation, and wind speed.
In contrast, soil sensor-based irrigation alerts rely on sensors embedded in the soil to directly measure soil moisture levels. When the moisture content drops below a predefined threshold, an alert is triggered to initiate irrigation.
In summary:
- ET-based alerts: Indirect, based on environmental conditions.
- Soil sensor-based alerts: Direct, based on actual soil moisture data.
Soil EC is measured in dS/m (deci-Siemens/m).
Soil moisture is measured in % VWC (Volumetric Water Content) unit.
If the soil across the farm is not uniform, then the farm needs to be divided into sub-farms, and individual IoT devices with Soil Sensors need to be installed in each sub-farm to get accurate readings.
The Price of the JioKawach device is INR 47K (Inclusive GST) for a single soil sensor-based device and INR 52.5K (Inclusive GST) for a double soil sensor-based device. The subscription charge for IoT services is INR 2359/- (including GST) for 12 months which needs renewal annually.
The Price of the JioNetra device is Rs. 22,770/- (Inclusive GST). This cost included Rs. 1,770/- of annual Subscription Charges. Farmers have to renew the annual connection charge from 2nd year onwards to keep their subscription active.

Soil Moisture is calculated using total Evapotranspiration (ET) loss, maximum root zone depth and water holding of soil.
Evapotranspiration (ET) is the process by which water moves from the land to the atmosphere – via Evaporation (from soil surface and leaf surfaces) and via Transpiration (through the plant). The ET- based alert is sent when the Soil moisture value drops from Optimum to Stress zone. Using the farmer’s irrigation details (i.e water input, last irrigation date, irrigation time) and ET loss (i.e. water output), JioKrishi calculates the actual water available and triggers the irrigation alert at the right time. Hence, it is very important that farmers should provide last irrigation date to receive accurate ET based irrigation alert.
